Finding a trustworthy pet sitter is one of those things that sounds straightforward until you're actually doing it. Handing over your house keys and your furry family is a huge act of trust. For many of the pet parents we meet, the hurdle isn't deciding to get a sitter, it's figuring out how to find one that makes them feel safe and comfortable while they're away...

In nearly a decade of sitting across New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, we've learned that a good vibe is a great start — but it's worth asking a few more questions than you might think.

If you're currently looking for a sitter, here are five questions that will help you find someone genuinely worthy of that trust.

🐾 How long have you been sitting, and what kinds of pets are you most experienced with?

When it comes to finding a trustworthy pet sitter, experience matters — not just how many years, but what kind of sits. A sitter who's great with laid-back cats might find a high-energy dog a completely different story, and that mismatch doesn't serve anyone well.

The S&S Perspective: Over nearly a decade we've cared for everything from tiny rescue pups to large senior dogs with complex needs, across three countries. That variety has taught us how to read a pet quickly and adapt to the specific rhythm of each home. It's something we'd encourage you to ask any sitter about — the more specific their answer, the better.

🐾 What does your typical day look like when you're sitting?

This one might catch people off guard, but it's important. There's a big difference between a sitter who plans to be home with your pets during the day and one who's mostly there overnight while they spend their days exploring (and neither is wrong, but communication is key).

If you're using a hobby sitter, it's worth going in with realistic expectations. Most are offering their time in exchange for accommodation — which is a lovely arrangement for the right pet and situation — but they're unlikely to be home with your pets during the day. Just be upfront about what your pet actually needs before committing!

The S&S Perspective: Because we work remotely, we're also home with your pets during most days. We know from experience that for pets who thrive on company and routine, that level of presence can make a real difference. It's worth clarifying upfront whatever kind of sitter you're considering.

🐾 Do you have references and a police check?

References are pretty standard, and any experienced pet sitter will likely have them readily available. Police checks are less common among hobby sitters, but professionals often have them already. Common or not, they're worth mentioning it would make you more comfortable.

The S&S Perspective: We keep both current and are happy to share. If you're working with any sitter and feel a little awkward asking know that it's not a silly question. Just communicate clearly and kindly, and the right sitter will understand.

🐾 How often will you send updates?

Most sitters are happy to check in, but the frequency varies a lot. Some send updates every few days, others daily. Neither is wrong — it just depends what you need to actually feel at ease.

The S&S Perspective: If you know you'll be missing your pup the moment you hit the airport, tell your sitter upfront. We love sending daily photos and videos — there's something about seeing your pet relaxed on their favourite spot that makes it a lot easier to actually enjoy your trip. Whatever you prefer is fine, just be sure to communicate clearly and everybody wins!

🐾 What do you need from me to make this sit go well?

This one works in both directions. A sitter who asks thoughtful questions before they arrive — about your pet's routine, your home's quirks, how you like to communicate — is usually a sitter who genuinely cares about getting it right.

The S&S Perspective: We use a detailed intake form and love when owners put together a simple house manual. The more we know going in, the more your pet's life can feel completely normal while you're away. Whatever sitter you choose, a good handover conversation is worth its weight in gold.

On finding the right fit...

Finding a trustworthy pet sitter takes a little time and the right questions — but it's absolutely worth it. Whether you end up booking with a professional service, a trusted hobby sitter, or someone in between, what matters most is that you feel genuinely confident leaving your home and your animals in their hands.

We hope this helps. And if you'd like to learn more about professional pet sitting services, and how they work, check out our services page or get in touch — we'd love to hear about your furry family!
